Biography

KAREN DESALVO, MD, MPH, MSc is a physician whose career is dedicated to improving health with a focus on vulnerable populations. She most recently served as Acting Assistant Secretary for Health at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) and served as the National Coordinator for Health Information Technology concurrently for two years and focused national attention on moving beyond electronic health record adoption to interoperability to support innovation and consumer health goals. She co-led a successful Delivery System Reform strategy at HHS that set and met historic goals in payment reform and supported transformed care models. DeSalvo was previously New Orleans Health Commissioner and professor of medicine and vice dean at Tulane School of Medicine. She earned her MD and MPH from Tulane and an MSc from Harvard School of Public Health
